Gambling Should Be Fun
Gambling is entertainment. It should never be seen as a way to make money, solve financial problems, or escape from stress or anxiety. If gambling stops being fun, it's time to take a break.
Are You Gambling Responsibly?
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Do you bet more than you can afford to lose?
- Do you chase losses by placing more bets?
- Has gambling affected your relationships, work, or finances?
- Do you feel anxious or irritable when you're not gambling?
- Do you hide your gambling from friends or family?
- Do you borrow money to gamble?
If you answered yes to any of these, please consider reaching out for support. Free, confidential help is available - see the resources below.
Stay in Control
- Set a budget - only ever gamble with money you can afford to lose. Set a strict weekly or monthly limit and stick to it.
- Set a time limit - decide in advance how long you'll spend gambling and stop when that time is up.
- Never chase losses - if you've lost, accept it and walk away. Chasing losses almost always makes things worse.
- Don't gamble when emotional - avoid gambling when stressed, upset, or under the influence of alcohol.
- Take regular breaks - step away regularly and don't let gambling dominate your time.
Tools Available From Bookmakers
All licensed UK bookmakers must provide responsible gambling tools. You can use these at any time:
- Deposit limits - cap how much you can deposit daily, weekly, or monthly
- Loss limits - cap how much you can lose in a given period
- Session time limits - limit how long you can be logged in
- Reality checks - pop-up reminders of how long you've been playing
- Self-exclusion - exclude yourself from one or all bookmakers
Self-Exclusion: GamStop
GamStop is the UK's national self-exclusion scheme. Registering excludes you from all licensed UK gambling sites for a minimum of 6 months. It's free and takes around 5 minutes.
